Private Pilot License: Preparing for the FAA Written Exam

Picture
Being a private pilot may be a career or a hobby. Whatever reason you have, you need to acquire a private pilot license. Doing so would entail a great deal of training and testing. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, gives strong attention to all private pilot testing in order to guarantee air safety.

One part of the intensive requirements for a private pilot license is the exams. There are two: the written (also known as knowledge test) and the practical (also called check ride). The focus here is on the FAA written test preparation.

Learn All You Can While in School
The whole preparation starts with the flight school. It would be better to study in an FAA-certified pilot school. While studying, make sure that you learn all the fundamentals.

The Ground School is where you’ll learn flying fundamentals including mathematics, physics, and flight theory. These will widen your knowledge about flight fundamentals – the thing you need for the private pilot license written exam.

Exam Review
If you have already completed your studies in a flight school and you didn’t take the written test right after, you probably want a review instruction before you take the exam. It’s best to refresh the mind since it’s possible to forget theories come exam time. Remember, you need to get a grade of 70% or higher in the exam to pass.

So, an important part of your FAA private pilot written exam preparation is the exam review. You may do this by yourself. Consult the site of FAA for good resources. Or you may also enroll in a review service if you have some bucks to spend.

To make sure your money won’t be wasted, take your time in selecting the review service provider carefully. Some flight schools offer this to students who graduate from their school. Many online providers are also available. Be aware, though, that each would claim they have the best service. Here are some things to think about. It’s best to gather information from an unbiased third party.
  • Check the background of the instructors. They may be all qualified instructors. However, it might be a good idea to choose those composed of experienced pilots. They have experienced the testing process, so they won’t only be able to coach you on the lessons to review. They can also give you insights on what to expect from the exam.
  • Make sure that the review provider regularly updates their material. Reviewing outdated material may negatively affect your performance in the exam.
  • If the review provider is online, check out what features they offer to reviewees. Their reviews must be flexible enough so that whether you want a general review or focus on certain topics, you can get what you need.
